There are two types of CE Marking product certification for electrical equipment: one is according to the Low Voltage Directive (2006/95/EC) and the other is according to the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (2004/108/EC). If a manufacturer is selling electrical products in the European Economic Area (EEA), it is their legal responsibility to ensure that their products comply with these standards.
Manufactures are not required to obtain official certification under these directives. However, if a manufacturer is not an expert in the related conformity assessment activities that are required by the directives, then it is highly recommended that they have their conformity assessment performed by an independent conformity assessment company such as NORTHCERT.
Compliance with the Low Voltage Directive is required for electrical equipment with an input ot output voltage between 50 and 1000 V for alternating current and between 75 and 1500 V for direct current. This Directive covers all health and safety risks, thus ensuring that electrical equipment is safe in its intended use.
How does the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive work?
Compliance with the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive is required for electrical equipment to ensures that the electromagnetic emissions of the equipment is limited to a level that ensures that the use of the equipment does not disturb radio signals, telecommunication, and other equipment. The Directive also governs the immunity of such equipment to interference and seeks to ensure that this equipment is not disturbed by radio emissions when used as intended.

For both the Low Voltage Directive and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive, it is the manufacturer’s legal responsibility to ensure that their product complies with the applicable directives before placing the CE mark on it and selling it within the EEA. Therefore, it is important to have some documentary evidence (i.e. test reports, etc.) showing that they have accounted for all relevant criteria in the directives.
