How does CE marking work for construction products?
Compliance with the Construction Products Directive, Regulation (EU) No 305/2011, is required for certain construction products being sold in the European Economic Area (EEA). This directive covers all health and safety risks, thus ensuring that the products are safe for their intended applications before being placed on the market.
According to the regulation, the requirement for CE marking applies to the following products:
“any product or kit which is produced and placed on the market for incorporation in a permanent manner in construction works or parts thereof and the performance of which has an effect on the performance of the construction works with respect to the basic requirements for construction works.”
It is the manufacturer’s legal responsibility to verify that their product complies with this directive before placing the CE mark on it and selling it in the EEA by having a Notified Body certify conformity to the directive. This involves having a proper product design and proper documentary evidence (i.e. test reports, etc.) to show that the product complies with all relevant criteria in the directive. NORTHCERT assists manufacturers in ensuring that they have a proper design and the required documents – upon successful completion of this, a certificate is issued to the manufacturer.
